Wood briquettes produce more heat than logs and burn for longer. With moisture levels of less than 10% it makes complete sense to use briquettes for wood burning stoves.

They are good for your fireplace, your stove, your pocket – and the environment. And they burn hotter, cleaner, are cheaper to buy and are much easier to store and handle than logs.

A wood briquette delivers around 50% more heat for each pound spent than logs. One briquette can last up to four hours, and big users will find they save around £150 a year compared to buying conventional logs.

The burn time of a wood briquette depends on various factors – for instance its composition, its size and ultimately its moisture level. A very dry, dense briquette has better burning properties than a traditional log. And it will burn for longer and at a much higher temperature.

Briquettes are still largely untried by many fire users in the UK – particularly in the south – but once you have tried them, you’ll never go back to hauling piles of logs off your drive.

In the UK today there is a north-south divide; southerners prefer kiln-dried wood while in Scotland people buy wood briquettes. But it is gradually changing as customers wake up to the benefits of briquettes.

Woodlets briquettes are made by applying 10,000psi (pounds per square inch) of pressure to woodchips. They are entirely natural – the lignin molecules in the wood melt under the pressure and bind the wood chip together to make the finished briquette.

Woodlets source all of its wood from within 60-miles of its factory in south west Scotland. Woodlets Briquettes have the stamp of approval from the UNESCO Biosphere in Galloway and Southern Ayrshire – the only globally recognised badge for sustainability and all of the forests where the wood is sourced are FSC® approved.

The moisture content of Woodlets briquettes is less than 10%, meaning they burn better and won’t cause chimney and flue problems. Logs sold in the UK generally have much higher levels of moisture – well-seasoned wood can be as high as 20% and other cases as much as 50%. Briquettes for wood burning stoves is the obvious choice!

A few things to be aware of when burning wood briquettes…

  • Keep the briquettes dry while you store them. If they get wet they will expand as they absorb moisture
  • Briquettes burn at a very high temperature. be careful not to exceed your stove’s heat capacity

On the plus side…

Woodlets Briquettes leave about 1% of their volume as ash – so no more emptying the stove everytime you have a fire!
